My sister and I put on the weight together (we were pregnant at the same time), so it was only reasonable that we should try to lose it together. We work in the same office, so we take our lunches together and spend them at the gym, trying to get rid of that baby weight. (Is it really baby weight if your daughter is two? J) Working out with my sister is like having my own personal trainer for free (and a little less bossy)! When I think I cant go any further, I just remember that she's there next to me, still going strong. Seeing her guzzling her water at her desk all day helps to remind me to drink my water, even when I’m craving some caffeine. We keep each other from getting off track, and we help motivate each other to work harder to reach our fitness goals. We've only been coming to LOA for a little over a month, and although we haven't noticed much difference on the scale yet, there's definitely been a change for the better in our overall well-being. Who knew that working out was such a mood booster? And the words of encouragement from my workout buddy don’t hurt either.

Hello ladies!
My name is Mendy, and I’m 26 years old. I’ve been coming to LOA every weekday for about 2 months now. My sister and I work together, so we always squeeze our workouts in on our lunch break. If it weren’t for my workout buddy/sis, I don’t think I would have the motivation to go to the gym every day. If one of us whines, “I don’t feel like working out today,” the other is quick to reply, “Get your gym bag, and c’mon!!” In a sense, I not only feel responsible for my own fitness, but hers as well. We depend on each other, and we lean on each other for support. If we have an awesome workout, we are sure to let the other one know what a great job she did, which motivates us to work harder the next day. She’s my backbone, and if it weren’t for my workout buddy, I’d be sitting at work/home everyday, just munching away and gaining weight. Not only is it fun to have someone to workout with, but for me, it’s a necessity. Together, we are going to shed these pounds!
Thanks, and good luck with your fitness goals!

I’ve been a member of Lady of America since the doors opened. In the first 3 years of my membership, I think I actually came in about 10 times. Then in November of 2004, after a family vacation to Hawaii, I saw the pictures and I was devastated. I was huge, tipping the scales at around 200 pounds (I’m 5’ 5”)! It took me until the early spring of 2005 to decide to make some changes.
A good friend joined Lady of America with me when I renewed my membership. Having someone to workout with was a blessing, especially at the early stages when we were sore, tired, and neither of us wanted to workout. We kept each other going. In 3 months I lost 5 pounds, and while any downward movement of the scale was an improvement, I had a long way to go. I was disappointed with my weight loss and the friend I was working out with took a job and was unable to workout with me. I thought I had some compelling reasons to quit.
I’ve always struggled with my weight, but when I was younger it came off and stayed off much easier. I always thought I didn’t look bad for someone my age with two kids. The scale and my body were telling a different story. The reality was I couldn’t carry a basket of laundry up the stairs without being completely winded. It was difficult to bend over to tie my shoes, and I was buying clothing sizes I NEVER thought I would wear.
In July I decided I needed some help. I started personal training with Denise. It was a turning point for me. Mainly, some things changed in my head. I realized that I was more disciplined then I thought I could ever be. I work out 5 days a week. I keep a food journal, which has helped me to maintain my focus. It’s so easy to take that last bite of mac and cheese out of the kid’s bowls or eat a “couple” of M&Ms or a handful of chips. It adds up. Writing down what goes in your mouth in a day is eye-opening. That’s not to say that I don’t have cravings. I don’t deny myself things that I really want. If I want a glass of wine or a few bites of dessert, I have them. I’m just way more conscious of portion size.
In 4 months I’ve lost 30 pounds. My goal is 50. If you see me in the gym I will be a sweaty mess. I know that I can’t come to the gym and breathe the air to reach my goal. The hours I spend at Lady of America are the best things I can give myself, and my family. I’m teaching my children to make good choices about food and to live a healthy lifestyle that involves being active and I get to shop for lots of smaller sized clothes!
