Mix it Up – Get Some Good Workout Plans Americans spend 25% less time outdoors than they did in 1987. According to a report by Oliver Pergams, Ph.D. of the University of Illinois, “Time spent in nature isn’t just down in the United States. It’s also declining in Japan.” Why the trend? Pergams and his team say the cause may be “videophilia,” which they define as sedentary activities involving electronic media like computers and TV. Don’t be a couch potato! Celebrate the change of season by taking your workout outdoors.

*Boot Camp:

If you live near a beach and in warm climate, chances are you’ve seen these weekly camps at the beach. No boot camp? A park, playground, hiking trail, track, stairs and hills offer great alternatives. Your body weight provides the resistance for a tough upper body workout and picnic tables, benches and fallen trees are ideal for step-ups, dips and push-ups. Climbing up the steps is a great high-intensity cardiovascular workout and is a great exercise to lose weight.

*Hit the trail:

Why walk indoors on a treadmill when you can power walk, hike or run outdoors? A great cardio workout, walking/hiking and running are free and can be done anywhere. All weight-bearing exercises, they tone and strengthen muscles, pump the heart and strengthen bones.

*Rollerblade:

A great cardiovascular workout, rollerblading also works strengthens and tones the thighs, gluteus, calves and hamstrings.

*Bike Riding:

Take the spinning class outdoors. Not only is it easy on the joints, it works the legs and helps with balance; and, just about everyone can do it.

Other fun activities to try: washing your car, softball, volleyball, basketball, swimming, spring skiing, canoeing, kayaking, soccer, golf.
